Most Visible Sighter for your Nymphing Leader

Locating and tracking your nymphing leader (or any river leader for that matter) is one of the most important aspects in river fishing. It helps you locate your flies quickly after a cast was made, but it also lets you know how eep you are fishing and when a fish eats your fly.

This tip was shared to us by our Stream and Sea Fly Fishing Tip winner of May 2025, Brett Leslie. It is a simple and effective trick to help you on the water. Here is a snippet taken from Brett’s submission that explains why he uses this technique:

"Enter the (p)sliding pseudo-euro sight indicator solution for Ballies like me (who are not fully constrained by pesky competition regulations). Use a small sliding knot in high-visibility coloured nylon, with two short-clipped tags, as a lightweight sliding indicator. This can be shifted up and down a much longer section of tippet than would normally be used. I like to use a double overhand knot in a short section of bright sighter material placed parallel to the tippet so that both the wraps of the double overhand knot pass over and under the tippet also. When the knot is lubricated and pulled tight, it can be easily slid up and down the tippet. The two loose tag ends are then clipped to length. I usually clip them to 1mm to 10mm length and use 6x to 3x sighter, hi-vis carp line, or even dacron backing, depending on the visibility and weight desired."

We encourage everyone out there to submit their fly fishing tips so that we can help each other learn. If your tip is selected for a video, you’ll win a R500 voucher at our shop.
