How to tie a Jig Bugger

The Jig Bugger is one of our favourite renditions of the popular Woolly Bugger. Whether we’re fishing small streams for trout, or looking for hungry smallmouth yellowfish in the rapids, this is a convedence fly we always carry in our box.

How to Fish the Jig Bugger

Here are some scenarios where the Jig Bugger works well:

  • Although a Jig Bugger can prove to be very effective, it’s a very intrusive fly to use, especially in a river environment. You’ll mostly find that the fly will produce fish within the first 5 casts. After that, even if there are more fish, they do tend to switch off. For this reason, a Jig Bugger will not be the first fly we tie on if we’re fishing a gin clear trout stream on a calm day. Where a Jig Bugger does excel is when you are re-fishing water that has been covered with other techniques (i.e. dry fly, dry-dropper, etc).
  • When the wind is blowing downstream and it makes casting upstream tough, it is a good option to hike up to the top of your beat and fish in a downstream direction. Here, a Jig Bugger fished in tandem with something like a small nymph or soft hackle works well.
  • Getting the fly in the zone is very important for success. When fishing downstream in shallow runs, we’ll often try and keep the fly in a small pocket without stripping it at all, where the flow of the water gives the fly movement. The idea here is to keep the fly in the zone and giving it short and quick jerks. This is a very effective way to cover pocket water quickly when the wind is howling downstream.
  • When fishing deep fast moving pools, you want to cover different water columns and have your fly move through different slots of the water. The fact that you’ve thrown the fly into a deep fast run and stripped it through it once does not mean you covered it. Push your rod tip down into the water to get the fly down when using a floating line. Here, small quick movements or long slow retrieves work well.
