CDC & Elk Dry Fly

R40.00

The CDC & Elk Dry Fly is a dry fly pattern that blends natural buoyancy with a lifelike silhouette. Combining the softness and movement of CDC (Cul de Canard) with the visibility and floatation of elk hair (or suitable deer hair), this fly sits perfectly in the surface film — imitating caddis and small mayflies with convincing realism.

It’s a reliable choice when trout are feeding confidently on top, especially in riffles, glides, and broken water where a natural drift makes all the difference.

Techniques

Upstream Dead Drift

Fish it upstream with a drag-free drift. The CDC fibres trap air and create subtle movement while the elk hair wing keeps the fly visible and floating naturally.

Caddis Hatch Fishing

Ideal during caddis activity. Present it across and slightly upstream, allowing it to drift naturally through feeding lanes.

Light Dry-Dropper Rig

The CDC & Elk can support a very small, lightweight nymph in calmer water, making it a versatile option when fish are feeding both on and just below the surface.

Skating Over the Surface

Another good technique is to skate the fly across the surface of the water.

What Makes the CDC & Elk Unique

  • Natural Buoyancy from CDC – CDC fibres trap air, giving the fly excellent floatation without excessive bulk.
  • Subtle, Lifelike Movement – Soft CDC creates natural motion even in slow currents.
  • Elk Hair Visibility & Structure – The elk wing improves durability and helps anglers track the fly in broken water.
  • Low-Riding Profile – Sits in the film like a real emerging or adult insect.

When trout are keyed in on delicate surface insects, the CDC & Elk offers the perfect balance of realism, floatation, and fishability. It’s a must-have dry fly for rivers and small streams alike.
