Muishond materials list

As mentioned in the Mission video tutorial, there are many materials that can be used when tying a Muishond fly. The choice of material will be determined by what you have on hand in your tying kit or what you want the fly to do.

Here is a list of materials we have put together, with explanations of each so that you can make informed decisions. We’ll go through one part of the fly at a time. We also have the fly available as a fly tying kit.

Muishond fly tying kit

We’ve put together a Bug Box that includes all the materials you’ll need to tie five Muishond flies. There are various options available, from small olive variants to large black flies.

Hooks

Our notes on the hook

The Fulling Mill Streamer Stripper hook is great for smaller size Muishond flies that will be used for Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish. The hook is teflon coated that makes it last very long.

Our notes on the hook

For a long time, the Gamakatsu B10S was the reference hooks for Largemouth Yellowfish – and for good reason. You can use this hook for all but the largest Largemouth Yellowfish. It is extremely sharp and has a thin wire.

Our notes on the hook

The Ahrex NS172 Curved Gammarus is a thin-wire short shank hook perfect for baitfish patterns. It is a great option if you’re looking for a hook with a very short shank and expect catching medium sized fish.

Our notes on the hook

We love using the Ahrex SA280 for Muishond patterns because it gives you so much confidence. This is a solid hook that will not open or break.

Thread

Our notes on the thread

Danvilles Flat Waxed Nylon 210D has been a staple in the shop for a very very long time. It is a flat thread with relatively good strength. We’ve been using it for saltwater flies and larger freshwater patterns.

Our notes on the thread

In our opinion, the best thread you can use for your Muishond pattern. Get the 150D in black or white (the white can be coloured with a permanent marker).

Eyes

Our notes on the eyes

A good quality tungsten eye from Fulling Mill available in a range of colours and three sizes.

The Fishient Tungsten Dumbell eyes are also a good option for medium to small Muishond patterns.

These are the original “Ufudu” eyes and we love using them. We’ve packed them in packs of 20.

The Fulling Mill Big Game Zonker (also known as magnum zonker), is perfect for flies size 4 and up.

Our notes on the hook

If you’d like to add more bulk to the bodies of your Muishond, Sculpting fiber is a good option. Can be “stacked”. This version includes some flash.

Our notes on the hook

If you’d like to make your own craft fur brush, or want to tie a hollow-version.

Our notes on the hook

Great alternative for craft fur.
