Diamond River Outfitters and Stream and Sea have teamed up to bring you a unique hosted trip to the promised land. The Eastern Cape Highlands have a reputation for offering some of the best trout fishing South Africa has to offer. This fully catered and guided trip is set against the backdrop of two of our favourite locations in this region.
This trip will be hosted by Rob Jeffrey, owner of Diamond River Outfitters, and Pierre Joubert from Stream and Sea.
Rob runs a boutique fly fishing camp on the lower Vaal River aimed at targeting Smallmouth and Largemouth Yellowfish. He has been fishing the Eastern Cape highlands for many years.
Pierre has fished around the globe and brings a great deal of fishing experience. He is a photographer and film maker by trade, so you can be sure that your trip will be well documented.
We are running three trips in 2024. This, the second one in the series, runs from the 15th to the 21st of April 2024. This is right in the thick of autumn, where the Eastern Cape Highlands puts on an incredible show. The Autumn colours on the trees and fish are something to behold.
The temperatures start to drop during this time of year, which increases the trout activity. The other positive of the colder temperatures is enjoying a couple of Scotches around the evening fireplace.
Our first destination is approximately 90 minute’s drive from Ladey Grey, Eastern Cape, where we’ll spend three evenings. Set on an a working farm, the house is charming and brings back memories of an old English Cottage.
Here we’ll fish two lesser known rivers. The scenery varies considerably from pastural scenes to fishing in deep canyons.
From there we move closer to the well-known trout town of Rhodes. Our accommodation is set right withing striking distance of well known rivers like the Bokspruit, Riflespruit, and Sterkspruit.
The main aim of this trip is to catch river trout, and a lot of them. These rivers see very low fishing pressure and have produced incredibly good numbers over the last couple of years.
We primarily try to target these river fish with dry fly, but we adapt the required technique as fishing situations dictate.
In most cases, trout range in between 20 and 35cm in size. As an idea of maximum size, the largest fish on one of our trips last year was a river fish of 47cm.
