SUMMARY:Advanced Casting Clinic Distance and Double Haul - 28 September 2024
DESCRIPTION:We have teamed up with one of our good friends\, Andy van der Werff\, to bring you this course on distance and the double-hail. Apart from being a good companion on the water and next to the campfire\, Andy is certified as a casting instructor by the International Federation of Fly Fishers. If you’d like to learn more about Andy\, be sure to check out his Fly Casting Coach website. \nThis course is aimed at the fly angler who has the basic fly cast under control\, but wants to add distance and line speed to their casting tool box. Yes\, we know that distance and reach isn’t always the most important\, but if you can double-haul properly and are able to get good distance\, you’ll be able to reach “normal” fishing distances with less false casts and hence catch more fish. \nThis is a highly personalised and comprehensive course that will take you to the next level in fly-casting and improve your fishing results. \nAll attendees should bring the following along: \n\nYour normal/favourite fly-fishing rod\, the one you are most comfortable with\, and if you have a second rod of 1 to 2 weights up or down\, bring that too. Try and stay in the 4 to 7 weight range.\nMatching reel and matching floating fly line. (A bright colour line is preferred but not essential)\nTapered leaders (0x or 1x) of around 9ft long. It will give you the most consistent turnover results. I can supply on the day at an additional cost if required\nSunscreen\nHat\nSunglasses\nWater\n\n

SUMMARY:Social Tying Evening - Local Reef Species with Conrad Botes
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, 29 January\, at 6 pm at the Fresnaye Sports Club for our first Social Tying Evening for 2024. These social events are aimed at building the fly-tying and fishing community and creating a space where we can all learn from one another. If you’ve always wanted to give fly fishing and tying a go\, our social tying events are the place to be. \nFor this month’s event\, fly fishing guru Conrad Botes will be joining us to share one of his favourite patterns for local reef species like Blacktail. He’ll also cover typical conditions and structures to fish and what line and leader to use. Our coastline offers great opportunities to target these reef species and offers great fly fishing opportunities. \nThis is a tie-along event\, so please bring your vice\, tools\, and thread along. We’ll cover the rest of the materials. If you don’t have a vice and want to give fly tying a go\, please reach out to us and we’ll sort you out. \nThere will also be a short casting course by the one and only Andy van der Werff\, which will end with a casting competition. \nBooking is essential and costs R250\, which includes the following: \n\nAll the fly tying material for the flies\, including extra to practice the pattern at home\nA boerewors roll and chips\nA beer\nEntry into the evening’s raffle\n\nThere’s also a non-tying option that costs R200\, which includes the following: \n\nA boerewors roll and chips\nA beer\nEntry to the evening’s raffle\n\nBookings close on Monday\, 29 January\, at 8 am. \nWhy do we do online bookings?\nSome of you might wonder why we do online bookings\, and it’s a great question. Here are the reasons: \n\nIt helps us prepare better if we know exactly how many attendees there will be. We pre-pack all the materials and and want to ensure that each person receives their own fly tying pack.\nWe can manage the chow a lot better\nProbably the main perk for you as a guest to one of our events is that you qualify for a 10% discount on any pre-orders. That means we send you a discount coupon that can be used on our shop prior to the event. Your order will be waiting at the event with your fly tying materials.\n\n

SUMMARY:Advanced Casting Clinic Distance and Double-Haul - 18 November 2023

SUMMARY:Klein Jakkalsies Fly Tying Workshop with Gordon van der Spuy
DESCRIPTION:The Feather Mechanic in conjunction with The Transvaal Fly Tyers Guild and the Jacaranda Fly Fishing Club presents Klein Jakkalsies\nThis fly tying workshop\, presented by Gordon van der Spuy (aka the Feather Mechanic)\, focuses on those tiny details (klein jakkalsies) in fly tying that often get overlooked. Small details make a big difference but in many instances\, tiers aren’t aware of them. The path the fly tying enlightenment lies in understanding the logic behind what you’re doing when you are tying a fly. \nAspects covered during the workshop include: \n\nThe importance of thread selection and thread control\nEstablishing wraps\nConventional and unconventional wraps\nThread toe=rque and how it affects you\nHow materials influence the way you work with them\nThe design principles of tying\n\nThis workshop will not teach you how to tie “10 killer patterns”. Through Gordon’s expertise and proven methods\, he will give you the tools to understand why those patterns are effective and to incorporate this newly gained knowledge in whatever pattern you’re tying. The idea is to get people thinking and not just following. \nDuring the event\, there will also be a screening of local fly tying films. \nThe workshop costs R200 per person and includes the following: \n\nBoerewors roll\nR50 fly tying material voucher

DESCRIPTION:Join us on Monday\, 4 September 2023\, 6pm at the Fresnaye Sports Club for our next social tying event. These social events aim to build the fly tying and fishing community and create a space where we can all learn from one another. If you’ve always wanted to give fly fishing and tying a go\, our social tying events are the place to be. \nFor this month’s event\, we’ve invited Tyrone Knight (check out his Instagram profile) to share one of his favourite flies for Garrick. He’ll also share some insights on how to target these special fish on fly. We will also have a couple of fly rods at the event that you can cast and will have a small casting competition. \nThis is a tie-along event\, so please bring your vice\, tools\, and thread along. We’ll cover the rest of the materials. If you don’t have a vice and want to give fly tying a go\, please reach out to us and we’ll sort you out. \nAs an added bonus\, the guys from the Zandvlei Recreational Angling Association will be there to tell you all about the conservation work they’ve been doing and planning. Also\, how you can get involved to protect this gem. \nThere will also be a selection of Garrick Flies for sale from the guys over at OG Fly Studio. These flies are designed and tested on Zandvlei and are the best of the best. \nBooking is essential and costs R250\, which includes the following: \n\nAll the fly tying material for the flies\, including extra to practice the pattern at home\nA boerewors roll and chips\nA beer\nEntry into the evening’s raffle\n\nThere’s also a non-tying option that costs R200\, which includes the following: \n\nA boerewors roll and chips\nA beer\nEntry to the evening’s raffle\n\nBookings close on Monday\, 4 September\, at 8am sharp. \nWhy do we do online bookings?\nSome of you might wonder why we do online bookings\, and it’s a great question. Here are the reasons: \n\nIt helps us prepare better if we know exactly how many attendees there will be. We pre-pack all the materials and want to ensure that each person receives their own fly-tying pack.\nProbably the main perk for you as a guest to one of our events is that you qualify for a 10% discount on any pre-orders. That means we send you a discount coupon that can be used on our shop prior to the event. Your order will be waiting at the event with your fly tying materials.\n\n

Although fly anglers are probably not the source of this pollution\, it is up to us to clean it up if we would like to keep the rivers pristine. \nThe Cape Piscatorial Society organises regular river clean up sessions and we urge you to join in. This river cleanup is on Saturday\, 21 January 2023. It’s also now essential that you join at least one river cleanup session as a prerequisite for the Jan du Toit’s draw at the beginning of each season. \nIf you’d like to find out more about the river cleanup sessions\, or you’d like to contribute to cleaning up the rivers in any way\, please feel free to either contact us or the Cape Piscatorial Society. \nWe also urge each angler to carry a rubbish bag with them. At the end of your fishing day\, pick up ay litter that you can find. It’s remarkable how much of a difference even a little effort can make. \nRemember\, a clean river is a happy river\, a happy river has happy trout\, and well\, happy trout makes us fly anglers happy.
