Klein Jakkalsies Fly Tying Workshop with Gordon van der Spuy

The Feather Mechanic in conjunction with The Transvaal Fly Tyers Guild and the Jacaranda Fly Fishing Club presents Klein Jakkalsies

This fly tying workshop, presented by Gordon van der Spuy (aka the Feather Mechanic), focuses on those tiny details (klein jakkalsies) in fly tying that often get overlooked. Small details make a big difference but in many instances, tiers aren’t aware of them. The path the fly tying enlightenment lies in understanding the logic behind what you’re doing when you are tying a fly.

Aspects covered during the workshop include:

• The importance of thread selection and thread control
• Establishing wraps
• Conventional and unconventional wraps
• Thread toe=rque and how it affects you
• How materials influence the way you work with them
• The design principles of tying

This workshop will not teach you how to tie “10 killer patterns”. Through Gordon’s expertise and proven methods, he will give you the tools to understand why those patterns are effective and to incorporate this newly gained knowledge in whatever pattern you’re tying. The idea is to get people thinking and not just following.

During the event, there will also be a screening of local fly tying films.
