This billfish-on-fly course aims to teach you everything you need to know to catch sailfish and marlin on the fly, without a guide.
Based out of Che Shale Hotel in Kenya, you will spend 3 days and 4 nights learning all there is to know about billfish on fly.
From fly-casting instruction to rigging flies and tying 20-lb tippets in shock leaders, it will all be covered.
During the day, you will be fishing on Unreel with a pro skipper (Rob), crew, and fly-fishing-guide (Jamie) teaching you the ropes of rigging, teasing, casting to, hooking-up, and fighting billfish on fly.
As a team of 3, you will depend on each other to catch fish. 2 of you will be on the teasers, and 1 on the fly rod, rotating with each fish – learning together and succeeding as a team all with our professional guidance.
Each fish will be recorded on a GoPro for video analysis in the evenings so we can see what went right/wrong each day, and how to improve.
Fly casting practice and instruction is also available each evening.
We are running this course out of Che Shale Hotel during Kenya’s peak sailfish season, mid-Oct to mid-Dec (exact dates are on the pricing page).
This is so that you get the most amount of opportunities possible to learn through experience while on this course.
Billfish-on-fly means one thing in the classroom, but a lot more once you’re at sea and doing it.
We would expect to raise between 10-30 sailfish a day which means you will get plenty of practice teasing, hooking, fighting, and landing sailfish on the fly.
Based at Che Shale, we are ideally located to fish some of the best sailfish grounds in Kenya. Also, it is 5 mins from your bedroom to the boat – you can’t ask for much more.
Arrive at Che Shale Hotel in the afternoon or late evening (preferably before sunset). Before dinner, we will cover all the basics – tackle, rigging, casting practice, and how it is all going to go down on the boat the next day. You then have all evening to ask any questions you have.
Breakfast at 6am, board Unreel at 6:30am. Morning briefing as we run to the fishing grounds – plan of action, reminders, questions, and rigging teasers. As we start trolling – fly rod setup, setting the teasers, teasing game plan, communication, and more.
Spend the whole day learning, getting this right, and catching sailfish on fly. Return to Che Shale at 4.30pm for showers, sundowners, daily debrief of what went right/wrong with video analysis, and fly casting practise (if you need it).
We will then make a plan for what to improve one the next day and discuss any more we haven’t covered from the syllabus.
Depart Che Shale Hotel after the final day of fishing at 5pm or stay another night and leave in the morning after sundowners and dinner.
We charge the same rate as the tour operators, so why would you book your trip with us?
The main reasons why we would recommend you purchasing your trips through us are:
*These are strict T’s and C’s, and it is only so that cancellations do not affect others on the same course as you.
