The Easy Peasy Ant is a simple but deadly terrestrial fly pattern that imitates ants that accidentally fall onto the water. Ants are a common food source for trout and yellowfish throughout the season, and fish will often take them confidently when they appear on the surface.
This pattern features a realistic segmented ant profile with a highly visible indicator for easy tracking on the water. It floats well and is perfect for targeting trout feeding opportunistically along banks, under overhanging trees, or during windy afternoons when terrestrials are blown onto the water.
The Easy Peasy Ant is a reliable choice when trout ignore traditional mayfly or caddis patterns. Keep a few in your box for those tough days when a subtle terrestrial presentation can make all the difference.
This fly does exceptionally well on the Cape Streams and the Bokong River. We’ve also used it on Sterkfontein dam with great success.
Ant patterns are especially effective during summer and early autumn, when terrestrial insects regularly fall into the water. Fish it close to the bank, under trees, or drift it naturally along seams where trout are looking for easy meals.
