Western Cape
Stillwater Experience

May to September

The Stream and Sea Western Cape Stillwater Experience is designed to give anglers the opportunity to fish one of the region’s most unique trout dams with the guidance of someone who spends time understanding its constantly changing conditions.

Stillwater fishing here can be technical, and success often comes down to knowing where fish hold, how they move, and which tactics work on the day. Fishing with an experienced guide will significantly increase your chances while making the experience more enjoyable and rewarding.

Based within easy reach of our shop in Paarl, this guided trip is available as either a one- or two-day experience during the prime stillwater season from May to September.

Why the Western Cape Stillwater Experience?

We approach our stillwater days a little differently. Rather than simply guiding you to fish, our aim is to help you understand how to fish Western Cape stillwaters effectively on your own.

These dams can be technical, and success often depends on reading the water, understanding trout behaviour, and applying the right tactics at the right time. Throughout the day we share the thinking behind where we fish, the flies we choose, and how we approach different conditions.

Of course, catching fish is always the goal, but we feel we’ve truly succeeded when you leave the experience confident enough to return to these waters and fish them successfully with your own friends.

When

The Western Cape stillwater season runs through the cooler months, from May to September. As water temperatures drop, trout become more active and feed more consistently, making this the ideal time to target them on the dams.

Throughout winter these stillwaters offer some of the best trout fishing opportunities in the region, particularly on calm days when fish cruise the shallows and feed confidently.

THE Fishing

Stillwater trout fishing in the Western Cape can be both technical and incredibly rewarding. During the experience you will learn a variety of effective techniques that will enhance your stillwater game on other waters too.

Along the way we also cover the fundamentals that help anglers become more successful on stillwaters — including basic casting, understanding aquatic insects (entomology), reading the water, and practicing good catch-and-release principles.

The aim of the Western Cape Stillwater Experience is to help you learn how to successfully target trout on fly in a stillwater environment. The experience caters for beginners (women and men looking to try fly fishing for the first time), more advanced anglers wanting to refine their techniques, and children (with parental attendance or as part of a parent-and-child fly fishing experience).

We also have the flexibility to create custom experiences, including small group or corporate fly fishing events.

Fishing will be done on foot off the bank, or from floating craft like float tubes or inflatable boats.
